About naming shots in the Resolve timeline:
With a bit of manual work you can have each shot in timeline to match one clip in the bin.
The usage column will show how many times a clip has been used. So you know what clips are used several times.
Bringing that clip from bin to the source monitor, you can use match frame to find the shots in timeline (hitting match frame again will toggle to the next instance)
Copy the the clip in the bin, (the copies will not be linked to the timeline, they are separate instances)
One by one force conform the duplicate shots from the timeline to the copied shots in the bin.
Now each shot in the timeline has a corresponding clip in the bin, and you can change the names of those clips individually.

Re: anyone found a good Generation alternative
The point is to avoid workarounds as they multiply. I had a show with 350 shots, 3 plates on each shot, 3 outputs (QT, EXR and JPG), if I can reduce just 1 click I can save hours.
But probably more importantly, having workarounds like this increase the rate of user error.
All I want is,
Track 1 labeled "reference"
Track 2 Labeled "pl01"
Track 3 Labeled "pl02"
Track 4 Labeled "pl03"
And have Resolve take the CLIP on the timelines name so I can construct filename like
sc250_0050_sourceplate_pl01_v001.####.exr
The export tags in the file render doesn't respect the timelines clip names.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
But back to the topic,
Has anyone pushed resolve to replace Generation ? If so, how far away are we from doing version review and scripted updates of timelines ?
Thoughts ?

Scripted updates of timelines you can do. So it's possible to make a script that populates a Resolve project with new shots or as they come off the farm whatever.
The rest is a mess from a UI standpoint. There's some under-the-hood things that are missing, like access to other channels in EXRs or access to EXR metadata. You can't even dispatch renders or even continue to use the application while it's rendering. But even ignoring that, the UI is not purpose built like Generation for what it did. Could they make an extra tab? Yes. Could they make a separate application? Yes. I don't know which makes more sense. Resolve is clunky and it consumes insane resources for "casual" use. Like you can't leave it running in the background while you did your normal work. And it takes too long to get back to your project in Resolve if you don't leave it in the background.

Once upon a time, Arvid Bjorn created a project called VFX Desktop:
I have no idea whatever happened to it.

I remember VFX Desktop, it was great! There was even binary available. The reels are good for digging thru plates, or fixing frames in stop motion. Unfortunately, similar problem to Generation - no multi layer timeline.
I would love to have both - reels AND multi layer timeline, like in old Media Illusion.

Seems like the folks at Tangent Labs were also in need of a Project Management tool. They recently released 'Loupe'.
https://www.tangent-labs.com/loupe-aws
Don't know much about it, but it seems to cover most use cases. It's cloud based, which is a plus for multiple teams working at different locations. Subscription though, which may not be ideal for some folks.

Re: anyone found a good Generation alternative
That feels more like a "normal" project manager than generator in a way.
I have had an eye on Tangent Labs for a while but they seem pretty closed...
So I would highly suggest CG-Wire's Kitsu instead
https://www.cg-wire.com/
It's subscription based but if you host it yourself it's totally free. It's also open source and they have a very easy API if you want to write some scripts/programs for it
I for one have made a Kitsu plugin for Prism-Pipeline (https://prism-pipeline.com/) in just a few days (I'm very new to python so that's why days and not day)

For anyone wondering how to host Kitsu yourself, here is the link to their docs: https://kitsu.cg-wire.com/installation/
In short, you need a unix computer (ether normal computer, virtual or one like raspberry pi) and then just follow the todo.
They also have a docker file but they don't recommend using it for productions (but I still use it on my Synology nas after a lot of trying to get it working the correct way).
A lot of people is following this tutorial on how to set it up on a Raspberry Pi in a good way: http://vfxgeek.video/2020/09/10/raspber ... nt-server/
