In the olden days, producers knew what visual effects were. Now they’ve gotten into this methodology where they’ll hire a middleman – a visual effects supervisor, and this person works for the producing studio.
They’re middle managers. And when you go into a review with one of them, there’s this weird sort of competition that happens.

It’s a game called ‘Find What’s Wrong With This Shot’. And there’s always going to be something wrong, because everything’s subjective. And you can micromanage it down to a pixel, and that happens all the time. We’re doing it digitally, so there’s no pressure to save on film costs or whatever, so it’s not unusual to go through 500 revisions of the same shot, moving pixels around and scrutinizing this or that.

That’s not how you manage artists. You encourage artists, and then you’ll get – you know – art.

If your idea of managing artists is just pointing out what’s wrong and making them fix it over and over again, you end up with artists who just stand around asking “OK lady, where do you want this sofa? You want it over there? No? Fine. You want it over there? I don’t give a fuck. I’ll put it wherever you want it.” It’s creative mismanagement, it’s part of the whole corporate modality. The fish stinks from the head on down. Back on Star Wars, Robocop, we never thought about what was wrong with a shot.

We just thought about how to make it better.

Yeah, definitely penalize any requests.

If the prediction that there is a new version for SIGGraph proves true, then any wishlist items are far too late to matter. So let's stick with predictions.

Absolutely

Opening post has been adjusted, and there will be a short grace period for retracting wishes :D

And the more accurate the predictions, the more points!

If I recall correctly, they announced a new Fusion version in "summer". Not sure if IBC still qualifies for that.

IBC, as a conference, is in the summer, yes.

Second half of September is almost autumn to me. ;-)
But in that case, my SIGGRAPH prediction would be that we probably have to wait for IBC.

You're really having high hopes for Siggraph, aren't you? :)

In order from "possible" to "keep dreaming":

I think we will have better integration with DaVinci Resolve:
- Support for DPX 12 bit as an export format for Fusion Connect
- Possibility to trim / slide / extend clips exported to Fusion after the creation of a Fusion Connect Clip

We will get rid of Quicktime Player (at last)

We will be able to select our OpenGL device (as we can now do with OpenCL)

We will have real reflections in 3D.

OpenGL renderer will support soft shadows with all lights (except ambient, of course).

Linear workflow will be painless and transparent, with all tools adjusting its parameters and ranges to follow the linear math.

OK, official prediction #3, there will be a new keyer, partially based on Advantedge, but it will NOT be branded as such in the tool controls. Meaning, the brand name won't be used like "Primatte" is now. Under the hood, the code won't look anything like Advantedge, not that users will be able to see that, but the basic workflow will be familiar to anyone who has used Advantedge.

So far the WSL SIGGRAPH 2017 guessing game has already listed most of the things I could reasonably expect to find in a shiny new copy of Fusion 9.

I hope I'm not spoiling my ballot but I'd like to try something different and make my WSL SIGGRAPH guessing game entry a long distance moon shot at guessing what we could expect to see happening at SIGGRAPH 2018.

I think Fusion X will launch at SIGGRAPH 2018 and we can expect to see the addition of a new OpenEXR deep compositing toolset including a module for deep data based bokeh simulation. macOS users will be able to buy Fusion X in the Mac App Store.

On the same day at SIGGRAPH 2018 the Foundry will have a surprise announcement that the unprecedented success and popularity of their Elara cloud platform means that it is now time to end the sale of permanent Nuke/NukeX licenses and go for a 100% subscription platform offering. They will say that customers prefer the convenience and affordability of Foundry maintenance plans without having to pay the large upfront cost of needing to buy Nuke first. Also I think by SIGGRAPH 2018 the Foundry's CaraVR toolset will likely be added "free" as a bundled item that ships with every copy of NukeX.

Again. This is my 403 days away entry for the WSL SIGGRAPH 2018 guessing game contest. ;)

With no news or update for 6 months I'd be very happy with any sign of life :(
