Pipe Grab Distance

Does anybody know what the "pipe grab distance" option in the flow prefs actually does? I think Fusion could do with 80% less checkboxes and option-mayhem - I've only modified maybe 1-2% of Fusion's options in my lifetime.
So I'm currently going on a quest to find out what they actually do. And I'm baffled at how unnecessary most are. And with pipe grab distance I can't actually figure out what it does. 1 pixel or 10 pixels... grabbing pipes feels the same either way.

if u set it to 1px, u need to exactly hit the pipe , if u set it up to 10 px, u only need your mouse near the pipe.... it is "usefull" for very big comps, when working with a big "zoomout" .

thanks. but that's what I've tried. I don't get the feeling that I need to aim for the pipe much closer at 1px than at 5px or 10px. hm... does this affect the pipes or the input triangles where a pipe ends?

Seems like it only affects new comps. Existing ones can only be changed to a different pipe grab distance via scripting commands (comp:SetPref). That's really odd because the other grab distance option that relates to controls is a global option.

It's weird that it would be a comp preference at all. Like why would you want to change the pipe grab distance on a per-comp basis?

It seems like an option useful for high resolution displays or tablet/touch inputs, so it should be machine specific, or in the case of personal preference, user specific.

"why would you want to change..." is what I'm thinking about many options in Fusion :-) I think it's weird that we can choose to have distorted thumbnails on tools and in Fusion 7 we can change the default ambient light in a 3D scene with no lights. But the option for mousewheel zooming without the ctrl key has no checkbox and requires hacking instead.

Hi there,

I finally managed to login to the forum, seems I was banging at the wrong door. :(
Thanks for letting me in, Pieter :P

Now for a first question:
Can someone tell me where I can find this "hack"?

No worries, welcome creacon! :D

Aaaaah, I saw you at that door - ah shame, I was so happy I had one legitimate user besides the one hundred spam accounts, but it's a mistake. :|
Does remind me I have to update that place so people come here instead... thanks.

As to your question, you can find that hack here: http://www.vfxpedia.com/index.php?title ... Techniques

Search for "mousewheel" in the page.

Although much better IMO is to use a tablet to navigate Fusion :)
