[Fuse][Patreon] Suck Less Write On - a Modifier Fuse

#1

Post by SecondMan » Wed Dec 04, 2019 12:05 am

Hello hello hello,

This December, WSL is on Patreon for one whole year! And I wanted to mark the occasion with something to say thanks with, so I created a new Text Modifier Fuse called Suck Less Write On, of which you may have seen a tiny little early prototype on the forum recently.

This took me a lot longer to write than I initially thought, but it was fun and I have learned a great deal. About Lua, about how you can really code yourself into a corner, about the importance of debugging, about different ways to tackle certain problems which may lead to new features down the line (or another rewrite)... But it's here, it works, it made it on time, and it has become a pretty neat tool, too:

Image

It does lines, words and characters separately, forward and backward, you can mute and solo each one. It does order-of-operations, and a few other nifty things that you should really discover for yourself. If you're into titles, motion graphics, subtitles, lower thirds, text in general or karaoke, SLWO is a must-have in your tool belt.

It also has a very handy "Relative" mode, which may come in really handy when you're building templates:

Image

This is an exclusive Fuse for all you Patrons out there. However, because I also want this to stay in the spirit what I set out to do with WSL, I am going to combine this with a little social experiment... :)

This is what I am going to do: Suck Less Write On is available for download immediately for all Patrons of the Suck Less High Five tier and higher. But - and I have given this some thought:

When the number of Patrons (as indicated on the WSL Patreon page) hits 50, I will release Suck Less Write On on Reactor.

So how keen are you to get your hands on SLWO, support WSL, or help out your fellow Fusion friends? Here are a couple of obvious options to choose from:

  • You can choose to become a Patron for 6 dollars or more, and have SLWO immediately (hurray!), while also supporting WSL (double hurray!) AND increasing other people's chances of getting it later (triple whammy hurray!).
  • You can choose to become a Patron for as low as 1 dollar and keep your fingers crossed that enough of your fellow Fusioneers do the same, preferably before 6 months have passed and you've scored yourself a bargain. Or have you?
  • Or, you can also simply choose to sit back and wait and follow the freeloader model. Perhaps others are generous enough to sort it all out for you, or you can join the bandwagon for a buck when the number of Patrons is at 49, whenever that is (I'm not judging, but meh).
Who can guess what the result of this will be? Not me, but that's why I call it an experiment :geek:

If I may make a suggestion though, it has never been a better time to become a Patron. There is something around the corner that could really supercharge what WSL is going to be about in the next year, and Patrons will be the first to have a go with it.

With all that said and shrouded in further mystery, thank you and good night!

Pieter

Because even very small gestures can have big meaning in the world right now, Suck Less Write On is available on Reactor for everyone! :cheer:

Let's consider the social experiment complete. :)

I also made a post about it on the WSL Patreon page, for whoever may be interested.

Thanks, and enjoy, use it for something nice!

For some reason, Write On is not showing up in Reactor for me... but I became a Patron and downloaded it
Screenshot 2020-06-07 22.34.36.png
and I am relatively new, but I assumed that a right click at the Text+ Write On would reveal the modifier... And I don;t see it listed..

Hoping you can help... I know it's probably some lame thing I did. I'm still trying to get comfortable in Fusion.
OH I should mention, I am using Fusion 9 free version and DR16+

Much appreciated :)

Right-click on the Styled Text field itelf, not the "Write On" parameter (I can see where the confusion comes from...)

Oh, and in the Reactor menu, under Tools, you can find "Resync Repository" - see if after running that (and restarting Reactor) you can find the Fuse in there?

Hi, me again.
It is working in Fusion 9, can't find it in DR 16... ? does it work in DR 16 also?

I guess I'll have to use it as a VFX Connect Clip in DR 16...

Yes it works fine in DR16. You do have to install in both (Fu Standalone and DR) since the paths on disk are different.

The only thing that's a slight bummer is that for some reason the Inspector width in DR is limited, so annoyingly the UI for Suck Less Write On just doesn't fit:

It all works though, it's just a visual thing.

Firstly, thanks so much for this awesome modifier!

EDIT: Apologies, I'm just a f'ing idiot. I can solve this easily by setting H Anchor to Left and -1 so the text appears from the left, and then of course adjust the X co-ordinate to align the left edge to where I want it to be.

It's not precisely the same as using Write On, as I would have an issue if I wanted the text to be centred while still being written-on from the left. But I realised I don't actually need that for the text I'm doing this write-on for, so that's irrelevant.

Original question, now solved:
Today I started using the modifier for the first time on a Text3D node, as an alternative to the built-in Write On Start-End. I want to use it in a macro that has two animations: the write on, and then an animated spotlight which doesn't activate until the write on is completed, ie the spotlight enables when Write On End = 1.

I found that using the built-in Write On had a problem: it doesn't do a great job of calculating the Start/End values, such that my example text is fully written when the End value is only around 0.85, and this value will vary depending on the text used.

So I used Suck Less Write On, and it works exactly as I wanted: the text is not fully written until Characters reaches 1.0, so I can use this in my expression to trigger the spotlight.

Unfortunately I now have a different issue: The way the modifier works - altering the Styled Text field - means that when the modifier is used, the text writes on differently to the Text3D Write On: with the built-in Write On, the text writes on from the left hand edge, ie left justified. With the Suck Less modifier, the text appears from the middle and expands outwards.

Is there any workaround I could use to get the Suck Less Write On to produce text in the same manner as the built-in Write On? If not, does anyone have any suggestions for a way to get the built-in Write On to operate such that text isn't fully written until End is 1.0? Or any other way that in an expression I could know when the write on is finished, and which will work in a macro with any arbitrary text?

Thanks very much in advance!
