tool popup menu crashes/locks up fusion

Fusion version:
9.0.2.15
and
16.1.9.9

OS and version:
windows 10

Additional relevant system info:
MSI GT75VR 7RF Titan Pro
Intel CM238 i7-7920 HQ CPU@3.10 GHz
DDR4-2400 (64GB)
1x M.2 SSD (SATA)
2x M.2 SSD Combo (NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 / SATA)
1x 2.5" SATA HDD
GPU 0: GeForce GTX 1080 with 8GB GDDR5X
GPU 1: GeForce GTX 1080 with 8GB GDDR5X
Windows 10 Home, 64-bit

Description of the bug:
Shift+H locks up / crashes fusion instantly.
it used to work, but some time ago it simply stopped functioning properly and i am wondering if others have this as well.
i am curious if the keyboard shortcut is mysteriously mapped into some other kind of windows feature that perhaps is causing this, perhaps in an update i got.

Severity (Trivial, Minor, Major, Critical)
major

Steps to reproduce:

Please, if possible, provide a Fusion setup to help demonstrate the behaviour, either as an attachment or between [code] tags:

For completeness' sake, Shift+H Toggles display of handles on spline keypoints:

Which works as expected here. To test your shortcut theory, does Fusion also crash when you select the toggle from the menu as in the image above?

No, that would be CTRL-SPACE. So it's that shortcut that does that?

Coincidentally I seem to have stumbled on something interesting here just today which may be the same thing. Question for you; are you using an external monitor attached to that laptop sometimes?

I can't test anymore at the moment, but the longer I think of it the more I'm convinced that this is what happened:

So today I had an external secondary monitor attached to my laptop's HDMI output, to run Fusion at a bit of a decent resolution.

Fusion opens on the primary (laptop) screen. I move it over to the secondary monitor. I start working, press CTRL-SPACE for the Add Tool window, which - annoyingly :) - opens on the primary screen. I move that over to the Fusion window and add my node.

From that moment on, Add Tool opens on the secondary screen (where I closed it last time) and I'm a happy camper for the rest of the time.

Work is done, and I don't need the external monitor anymore. I disconnect the HDMI, display settings reset to single screen on the laptop, I close Fusion.

Shortly after that I open Fusion again, though, funnily enough to verify the shortcut you mentioned in this very topic. And lo and behold! Fusion "locks" when I try to open the Add Tool window!

But I bet you Fusion is running fine, but has just opened the Add Tool window on the - no longer attached - secondary monitor. Of course that's impossible to reach now, and the focus is on it so Fusion seems unresponsive.

Tomorrow I'll connect the secondary screen again and I am pretty sure I'll see that darn little window appear in the middle of it.

I presume you're running Windows. To recover the 'lost' Add Tools window (or any un-maximized window stranded on an unconnected second screen):

Hit Escape a couple of times to be sure there are no other dialogs somewhere monopolizing program focus.
Summon the Add Tools dialog with Ctrl+Space.
Alt+Space to activate the universal Windows window menu.
Type m to activate move mode.
Push one of the arrow keys to nudge the unseen window.
Move your mouse. The window will attach itself to your cursor.
Left-click to drop the window.

It's important to follow the steps precisely and not touch any other button or key until the window's been recovered, or you have to start over from the beginning.

That sounds like one of those unlimited lives hacks from back in the Amiga days.

Can't wait to add that to my workflow

HA..just learned that the other day, and indeed it is very picky. Tried 5 times before it would work. very good procedure to know about. If that doesn't work you can always try "↑↑↓↓←→←→BA ". ;)

not working for me.
control+space also locks up fusion just like shift+space [which i thought was the shortcut]
hitting escape a few times and hitting control+space gave me the same lockup, so i am unsure what else to do, unless i reconnect it to my external monitor again and see if it lets me redirect it back to the laptop screen but somehow i am dubious of that working as well

Yes that's right, let it "lock" Fusion, it's not locked at all, the window is off screen.

Here are the steps again after opening Fusion:

  • press Ctrl+Space (Fusion "locks"),
  • press Alt+Space,
  • press m,
  • press an arrow key,
  • move the mouse to move the window back into your visible space,
  • left click to drop window in place.

After this, add a tool so the little window closes normally. When pressing CTRL-Space again, the window will open in the place where it previously closed.

I'm posting this in the beta forum next.

this sort of thing should be fixed though- using a second monitor comes up from time to time.

i am still not getting this to work.
i get as far as when i hit 'm' and my mouse changes into a four-pointed arrow to indicate 'move' but then i still don't see anything else, no window shows up and doing a left click doesn't position the popup window anywhere.
