[RC] LFTools - Lens Flares macros for Fusion

Where the future is being made, today.

Welcome to the WSL development corner!

In this forum, please post your development projects. You get kudos and feedback here.
Topics ideally have preset prefixes, and this is what they (might) mean:

  • [DEV] - very much work in progress, don't build a business on this, could go anywhere
  • [BETA] - should kinda do what it's supposed to do, please test, give feedback
  • [RC] - this may end up in Reactor soon, polishing up, now's the time for last minute thoughts
  • [ABD] - died a premature death, sadness, will not see the light of day ever (unless someone picks up the scraps)

Once a development project has been released (hurray), topics can be marked as - you guessed it - [RELEASED] :cheer:

Development topics only, please. For generic questions, how-to's, questions and inquiries about existing tools etc, please go to the appropriate other forums.

[RC] LFTools - Lens Flares macros for Fusion

#1

Unread post by Millolab »

Hey Folks!
I'm here to share something I've been putting a lot of efforts in.

Image

This set of macros were made when doing some R&D with @Captain LeBuck to build a Fuse. Since that project is on hold I decided to share my macros in the meantime. The macros, as they are right now are working only on f16. I need to add a few expressions to make them work in f9. I will do this asap. I'm going to share the whole set of macros on Reactor.
A tutorial video is on the works + a set of presets. I have a few ready, here they are.

Image

Here the list of the macros:
LFControls: this is kinda the brain of the whole system. In here you find the global parameters.
LFGlow: Glow and Spark element.
LFIris: Multi Irirs element.
LFCustomIris: Multi Iris element you can feed custom textures in.
LFAnaIris: Anamorphic style multi Iris element.
LFLine: Anamorphic line streak.
LFStar: Star element.
LFRing: Ring element.
LFHoop: Hoop element.

How does it works:
you'll need a Background. That could be a BG node or an image, you just need to pipe it into the LFControls node, then you build your flare as you want.

Image

In the Inspector on top of all the controllers you find a "Wireless link like" box where you just need to drag and drop the LFControls node.

Image

You can of course have more than one flare at once you'll only need one LFControls node for each of the flares.
A couple of technical informations. The multi iris macros take advantage of a custom version of @SteveWatson 's Cloner Fuse he was kind enough to write for me. All the macros are built to be resolution independent. With some extreme settings you can reach the edge of some of the elements.
Being macros speed can reduce dramatically adding more and more elements.
Do not expect VideoCopilot's OpticalFlares speed performances.

Anyway, here the fuse and the macros.
Please give them a spin and let me know your thoughts.

EDIT All the macros have been updated to work also on f9!

I actually searched the forums for lens flares about 10mins after you posted this. Crazy timing.

Can't wait for the video tutorial. I need flares on a shot coming down the pipeline soon.

Here a boring tutorial for the LFTools!

youtube it's probably still doing its thing and it's only 360p now.
I didn't go through all the single elements but, hey... they all work the same way
Now I just need to add one last macro to the set and i'm done. I actually already made some changes on the macros i posted here on WSL.
Hope to upload to Reactor soon!

Hi Millo,

Have a yellow area saying I don't have permission to access the LFTools macros, but some members have tried them out. Where can I find these macros, please?

I think you just need to be logged in to download the macro. Anyway I’m submitting to reactor very soon. I already made some changes in the macros. Be sure to get the latest ones when on reactor.

HI,

that is seriously impressive.

Not had a chance to try it yet but the level of control and customisation looks great.

And you perhaps overegged my contribution - it was not so much a rewrite as a cull :)

hey man! Thanks again, give it a spin and let me know your thoughts!
I have a question though. Do you think would be possible in your cloner to jitter the position along the spline?

:)

This is pretty incredible. When do you plan to release the preset pack?

Any chance of adding an auto-gen flare feature? Optical Flares has a neat feature that generates flare positions and adjusts intensity based on a reference clip/footage. Comes in handy when dealing with flashing lights in party scenes, police lights, etc--shots where manual placement becomes tedious.

Hi,

does this do what you want ? Using the Center property in the jitter panel. This was something that was in the original duplicate fuse I started with when I made cloner, but then it sort of got ignored(in my video tutorial I said it does nothing - which it didn't). I should add it to the proper cloner too.

hey @SteveWatson!
Thanks a lot for the cloner update!
Actually nope. What what I was asking is to randomise the position alone the spline. It should be possible, but I don't know how! :)
The Center Jitter randomise along X and Y. Don't know if I explained myself.

On a different hand I was able to make the whole toolset to work automatically in both f9 and f16 (using a mighty expression by @SecondMan )

I'm updating the macros in the first post. Be sure to update them!

Also, I'm done with my first preset pack.
Let me know your thoughts!

Hi,

if you could maybe post a picture of what you need it to do I'll look at it.

Ok great! Thanks a lot!
@SecondMan
On a completely different note. As you can see in the video, I used the “wireless link” drag and drop thing to avoid people to have to always add expressions and link stuff up. That’s a very pretty solution but it makes things quite a bit slower. Any idea why that is? I mean, the expressions would be the same. (And I’m talking like linking two points position)

🙏🏼🙏🏼🎉🎉
